RSP-BATESHWAR – GWALIOR -2024
As part of the curriculum, winter RSP was conducted by GUNI-FADP from 24/12/2024 to 31/12/2024. The B.Arch and B.Des students from 1st year to 3rd year embarked on a week-long immersive related study program at the Bateswar group of temples. The Bateswar temples, located in Madhya Pradesh, India, are a cluster of around 200 Hindu temples dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva. Constructed between the 8th and 11th centuries AD, these Nagara-style temples showcase intricate carvings and a unique architectural blend, reflecting influences from various dynasties. Though some structures are damaged, the Bateswar complex has been undergoing restoration for the last 20 years. This significant historical site offered a unique opportunity for students to engage with architectural documentation and preservation firsthand.
The students meticulously documented the temples, employing a variety of techniques including detailed measurements, site leveling survey, and illustrative sketching. They also utilized photography and videography to capture the intricate details and overall ambiance of the temple complex. Beyond the physical documentation, the program facilitated invaluable interactions with the Archaeological Department and the skilled workers involved in the ongoing restoration efforts.
These interactions provided students with insights into the challenges and complexities of preserving such important cultural heritage. This hands-on experience enriched their understanding of architectural principles, conservation practices, and the historical significance of the Bateswar temples.
